Discover "Slattenlangpat" – A New Archaeological Find on Bornholm
A world of mystery and history opens up with the latest archaeological finds on Bornholm. In Guldhullet near Rønne, archaeologists have made a remarkable discovery of gold diggers, which are now being linked to an old Danish folk tale. The magazine Skalk reports on this exciting find, which sheds new light on the lives and beliefs of our ancestors.
One particular figure stands out among the finds – a female figure measuring only four centimetres and weighing three grams. This small sculpture may well be the only one of its kind, not only in Denmark, but in all of Europe. According to René Laursen, museum assistant at Bornholm Museum, the figure is probably the legendary "Slattenlangpat", a Zealand water goddess.
Who Was "Slattenlangpat"?
"Slattenlangpat" is known from old folk tales as an elf woman who was hunted night after night by King Volmer. Although he shot her every night, she returned every morning. Unlike most elf girls, who are described as beautiful and dangerous to men, "Slattenlangpat" was a mature elf woman with breasts that hung down to her belt – a characteristic that symbolized her role as a fertility goddess. Her long breasts were not to be interpreted negatively; they represented her ability to provide nourishment and life to many children, including her "fish children", whom she could nurse from a stone near the stream.
Historical Finds from the 6th Century
The finds of "Slattenlangpat" and other gold figures in the field near Rønne have been dated back to the 6th century, long before the first written sources in Denmark. Since 2009, around 80 detailed figures have been found in this field, which archaeologists believe were sacrificed to the gods.
The latest discovery emphasizes that the old legends were not bound by geographical boundaries, but were passed down orally and inspired people across great distances. Although "Slattenlangpat" belongs to Zealand, it is clear that her story was also important on Bornholm.
Exhibition at the National Museum
The figure of "Slattenlangpat" is now part of the National Museum's permanent exhibition, where you can experience this unique part of Norse mythology up close.
