The story of Yggdrasil and its significance in the Viking Age

In Norse mythology, the world tree, Yggdrasil, was a mighty and unifying symbol for the entire cosmos and for the order in the world. The tree spanned the three realms of the world, connecting heaven, earth, and the underworld. Yggdrasil's crown, which was always green, reached all the way up to the heavens, while its roots ended in three different worlds: Asgard, Jotunheim, and Hel. Asgard was, of course, the home of the gods, Jotunheim was where the giants lived, and Hel was the realm of the dead. 

Under each root sprang a spring, which was the sacred place where the gods met. At the top of the Tree of Life sat the eagle Hrasvelgr, who was actually a giant in disguise. Above the eagle watched the hawk, Vedrfolner, who controlled the wind and weather. At the foot of the tree walked four deer, who fed on the tree. The four deer were meant to symbolize the four seasons in human understanding.

Yggdrasil was an important symbol for those who lived during the Viking Age. And during the Viking Age, many ceremonies and rituals were also held around Yggdrasil. And somewhat contrary to the fact that Yggdrasil is considered the "tree of life," many sacrifices were made in connection with the Vikings' traditions surrounding Yggdrasil. In fact, it was a way for the Vikings to worship the gods. Among other things, it is said to have been a tradition to make a sacrifice to the war god, Odin, before the Vikings went to war.
