Mead

Drink mead like a true Viking

Would you like to feel like a true Viking? Then you definitely need to taste one of our exquisite bottles of mead. We have a large selection of mead, each with its own unique flavor combinations. Click on the individual bottles or read more about mead here.

If you want to drink your mead in true Viking style, you can fortunately also find Drinking Horn and drinking glass made of horn at Ydale.

The history of mead

In Denmark, we naturally associate mead with the Viking Age. But did you know that mead in the Viking Age was considered a luxury drink, used only on the finest occasions and only by kings and wealthy chieftains? Mead was also known as 'The Drink of the Gods'. This is because mead was incredibly expensive to produce, as honey, which was one of the only forms of sugar available in the Viking Age, was extremely costly.

Maybe you belong to one of those who associate mead with beer? Although there are certain similarities, mead actually resembles wine more. Mead is fermented from honey, and it goes through almost the same process, but with honey instead of grapes.

What does mead taste like?

Mead is like wine and beer in the sense that there can be a world of difference in flavor from one type of mead to another. But a general rule of thumb is that the drier a mead is, the sharper the taste will be. A sweet mead with a high sugar content, on the other hand, will be rounder and fuller in flavor. You can find meads that resemble dessert wine and port wine. Here on this page, you can find a selection of meads brewed from various berries and fruits. Choose your favorite and order it home today.
