Beautiful and different pendant with mythological roots!
This piece of jewelry is a copy of a genuine find! The original was found near Trollhättan in Sweden in 1844. The original bracteate is now in the State Historical Museum in Sweden, and is believed to date back to the Viking Age.
This beautiful bracteate is decorated with a scene from Norse mythology. The story describes that the wolf Fenris had to try his hand at a chain called Gleipner. The magical chain consisted of cat's paws, women's beards, mountain roots, bear tendons, bird spit and fish breath - and it was impossible to tear.
Fenris demanded that one of the gods place his arm in its mouth as a pledge if it were to be chained, and Tyr accepted the challenge. When the chain tightened, and when Fenris had to admit that it could not escape, it bit its jaws together, and Tyr lost his hand. On this pendant, Tyr is shown with his left hand in the jaws of the wolf Fenris.
The pendant is 31 x 24 mm and is made of bronze.
