Beautiful and meaningful pendant with a motif of Sheela Na Gigs in genuine silver!

The motif on this pendant is a nude female figure, known as Sheela Na Gigs, which originates from the plinth of the baptismal font in Gelsted Church.

Figures like this - naked women with exaggerated genitals and smiling faces - can be found in countless churches in Europe, but the vast majority are in Ireland. This depiction is the most widely known of the Danish Sheela Na Gigs, and is believed to date from around 1200.

There are different opinions about the meaning of the name Sheela Na Gigs, but there is no general agreement on any particular explanation. Most of the figures date to the years 1050-1250.

Some scholars believe that she may have been a goddess of fertility, childbirth, or female strength, while others believe that she must have been a Christian symbol of sin, intended to warn churchgoers against their desires. Her apparent and overt sexuality was intended to arouse disgust and shame, but for the same reason she is often seen today as a feminist symbol of women's strength and right to their own sexuality and liberation. Modern depictions include clay Sheela figurines with glazed vaginas and gilded labia.

The pendant here has both a rich history and great significance for today's conflicts. Sheela Na Gigs is a strong and beautiful symbol of femininity and feminine strength and pride.

The pendant is made of genuine 925s silver.
