Beautiful imperial bracteate in genuine 925s silver!
A bracteate is a small metal plate worn as a pendant on a string or chain. Originally inspired by Roman imperial medallions, these pieces of jewelry were decorated with Norse runes, sacred symbols, and animal motifs over time. It is believed that they were used as amulets to protect against evil forces, and also served as status symbols, as they were a sign of wealth.
Over 970 bracteates have been found, dating from 450-550 AD, the majority of which come from Scandinavia. This pendant is a copy of one of the over 300 bracteates found in Denmark. The original behind this piece of jewelry was found in 1884 in Darum, near Ribe.
The bracteate here is 30 x 26 mm and is made of genuine silver.
